Southpoint Mixed Use under construction

December 2014

JTA are the architects and heritage conservation architects for this major redevelopment at South Bank Railway Station in Brisbane. A challenging component of the design was the requirement to retain and integrate ‘Collins Place’, one of the few houses remaining in South Bank from the Victorian era.

The builder Watpac and their subcontractor Freyssinet designed and tested a scheme for underpinning, support and raising of the house that allowed subsequent excavation beneath for construction of the new entrance and retail spaces designed by JTA.

JTA, led by Heritage Conservation Director Peter McKenzie, collaborated with the construction team and the structural engineer Aurecon to review the feasibility of the scheme and thereby retain the heritage significance of the house.

The images show the house after installation of the supporting piers and trusses and on completion of raising the house and of excavation beneath.
