An ambitious residential conversion project for first time developers Citywide Pty Ltd, this development refurbishes and transforms a 1930’s Art Deco warehouse into 11 contemporary multistorey apartments.
Retaining an existing Art Deco facade to Glebe Street, we have inserted new filigree louvre elements into extended window apertures to create a new language of privacy. And its muted palette – a neutral white scheme accented by black details – works in tandem with a relief of heritage tiles to capture the graphic nature of the original Art Deco spirit, whilst subtly updating it to modern urban standards.
- To the rear lane, four new, two storey apartments with north facing courtyards bathe in a sunny glow.
This project involved a complex heritage argument in order to establish an FSR for the site. Jackson Teece carefully considered form modulation over the site and prepared a Statement of Environment Effects to establish built form precedents throughout the precinct. The new form for the building has almost no overshadowing impact on neighbours, and the building has transformed a fairly poor warehouse building into a mixed heritage contemporary development offering a modern lifestyle.
- The Glebe Street frontage includes seven new, three storey ‘townhouse’ style apartments created above a common basement car park.
At the rear, four apartments with north facing courtyards have also been designed to take advantage of the northern aspect and sunlight. External copper cladding elements contrast against toned-down timber screens to create a bold graphic street frontage.
