The diverse operations of Pacific Power were centralised in this one building which also serves as the flagship for their joint venture with the University of Newcastle on research into areas of mutual endeavour.
The facilities, such as the laboratory, offices and teaching and workshop spaces, required a wide range of adaptable spaces with greatly differing and specialised functional and services needs.
A key component of the Brief was to design a building which demonstrated the efficient use of electrical energy.
Deep, naturally-lit space, computer-designed sun shading, lightscoops, lightweight reflective steel panels and a computer-monitored ventilation system substantially reduced the power consumption and running costs of the building.
