The high-tech Steel River site, driven by the private sector and supported by Newcastle City Council, has been extremely successful in attracting advanced technology businesses. Council assists development in Steel River if it conforms to stringent guidelines.

Expectations for the South-East Hill Precinct have been high with its vision being, “to be a world-leading, hi-tech eco-industrial and business park” encouraging “design innovation in all aspects of the occupation and use of the land”.

Jackson Teece was engaged to prepare Development Controls and a Master Plan for the Industrial and Business Park. Development controls were prepared to ensure the integration of the heritage and recreational/commercial precincts within the broader, hi-tech, light-industrial context. The Master Plan encouraged new buildings to adopt ESD principles in design and implementation.

Subsequently we prepared a Master Plan concept for Lots 50, 52 and 53 as part of a submission to the Department of Planning to have the site assessed under Part 3A of the EP&A Act.
